“Marist College is pressing forward to create a “cloud computing” center, partnering with IBM Corp. in a major venture that its leaders believe can lead to thousands of jobs grown or retained in the Hudson Valley.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., visited Marist on Wednesday to pledge his help in bringing federal aid to invest in a “New York State Cloud Computing Center” at the Town of Poughkeepsie school.

The cloud approach is a way to deliver computing and data services remotely via the Internet so that users need not own or be concerned with the hardware aspects. Its use is growing and seen as valuable to small businesses that can’t afford their own equipment or technology staff, as well as to large enterprises. IBM is among the major promoters.

“Cloud computing at Marist isn’t just pie in the sky, it means jobs on the ground in Dutchess County,” Schumer said at a news conference at the Hancock Center on campus.”
